ANTANANARIVO
Queen of Antananarivo’s Palace – name as The Rova of Manjakamiadana, is the landmark of Antananarivo. From the 17th century to the 19th century the rova served as a residence for the kings and queens of the Merina kingdom. In 1995 a fire almost completely destroyed the palace, sparing only the stone walls. Situated at the top of Analamanga Hill, the palace offers great panoramic views onto the city and the Twelve Sacred Hills.
ANTSIRABE
Antsirabe – or ‘the place of salt’, is an elegant city well known as the centre of the beer industry and we can smell the Star Brewery as we enter the town. Founded by the Norwegians in 1856, it is the only place which really feels and looks like a European city.
Lake Tritriva – Featuring beautiful green waters surrounded by a pine forest, Lake Tritriva is nestled at the foot of the eponymous mountain, reaching an altitude of 1,651 m. The lake is of volcanic origin, approximately 160 m deep, since it has various shoals and contains sulfurous water, bathing is forbidden.
AMBOSITRA
Ambositra – is the capital of Zafimaniry, characterised by its terraced rice fields beautifully arranged on the hills. The pretty town of Ambositra is considered to be the heart of Madagascar’s wood carving industry. Local houses featuring ornately carved wooden balconies and shutters, along with the architectural marvels of the Benedictine Chapel, make for a most attractive setting.
RANOMAFANA
Ranomafana National Park – It was created in 1991 to protect some of the mid-altitude virgin rain forest in this mountainous region, at 41 600-hectare. 4 hours expedition in the forest with a local guide to see 12 species of lemurs, two rarest species the greater bamboo lemur Hapalemur simus and the golden bamboo lemur Hapalemur aureus. The abundant wildlife that inhabits the area including striped civets, 7 species of tenrec, over a hundred species of bird. Wet forest characterized by numerous euphorbiaceous, epiphytic plants make this endangered and exotic forest charming and unusual.
FIANARANTSOA
Fianarantsoa – is Antananarivo’s twin city, the capital of Betsileo tribes. The lower town, is the most popular quarter, with its numerous brightly colored shops and commercial. The middle town Anatirova and Ambozontany quarter is the visitors’ favorite. The upper town also known as Antanambony, with colonial buildings, narrow winding streets, also discover the “Vatican of Fianarantsoa”, an impressive Tuscan-style cathedral.
AMBALAVAO
Antaimoro Rice Paper Workshop – Ambalavao’ town are sericulture and the handmade production of “Antaimoro” paper, from avoha (wild mulberry trees), whose origins date back to the 16th century. Visit Paper Anteimoro workshop, which is a remaining of the Arabian civilisation in Madagascar.
Porte du Sudrise – also called Three rocky hillocks which area also among the imposing rocky hill called “Bishop’s hat”. Another spectacular is the huge granite dome with twin rock towers called: “the gate of the south” which marks the beginning of the highland and the end of the south, called “archbishop’s cape” a sacred place for the local people.
ISALO
Isalo National Park – Nestled in the heart of Madagascar, captivates visitors with its dramatic sandstone formations, deep canyons and lush oases. Walk to the “Piscine Naturelle”, the famous «Natural swimming pool». Dramatic gorges and canyons have small streams and natural pools are colour a surreal brilliant turquoise-green, the colour emanating from their mineral content.
TULEAR
Ifaty – lies close to the town of Tulear on the South-west coast, is the largest lagoon of the country protected by a large coral reef, offers sand and sea hence the good diving and snorkeling.
Oceanographic Museum – The museum is the best in the Indian Ocean, a humble yet very rare collection of artifacts from all the kingdoms that have inhabited the islands over time.
Reniala Private Reserve – is a small protected area of only 60 ha. It shelters an amazing, bizarre and unique ecosystem which only occurs in the southern part of Madagascar: the spiny forest. The reserve was opened in 2001 as a botanical garden, ornithological park, and baobab forest.
